Can my book material be saved?

I have downloaded material on separate discs and now on a new computer, I tried to bring up this material when all I get is computer language in which I don't understand not can read it. Is this something I should be concerned with and is my material lost forever or is there something that can resurrect the data on these disc? Please help me with your wisdom on this matter!! What should I do?
